Learning Disabilities :
Learning disabilities are a group of neurological conditions that can make it hard for the child to read, write, and do simple math. It affects the child's brain to acquire, organize, retain, understand and use the information. But it does not affect intellectual disabilities. Symptoms include difficulties in identifying letters, numbers, colors, counting, rhyming, long-term or short-term memory, inability to hold a pencil correctly, inability to follow directions, and lack of coordination. Behavioral symptoms include not willing to read, going to school, blaming teachers, avoiding assignments, having mood swings, temper tantrums, and self-critical statements. Risk factors include biological family history, premature birth, fetal exposure to alcohol, delay in speech and language development, malnutrition, exposure to environmental toxins, and traumatic brain injury. Learning disabilities are associated with anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder.
