Iritis :
Iritis is the inflammation of iris (colored eyeball). It is otherwise known as anterior uveitis, which affects either one eye or both. It is combined with redness of the eyes, significant discomfort, photophobia and difficulty to see clearly. Sometimes, there is presence of eye discharge or frequent eye tearing, appearance of visual floaters or unusual flashes. It can gradually progress to cause glaucoma and vision loss if left untreated. Iritis is caused by underlying infections affecting the eyes, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, sudden traumatic injury to the eye and as a secondary complication of inflammatory diseases. An ophthalmologist (eye specialist) checks for clinical signs and conducts necessary tests and clinical investigations to rule out other conditions. A conservative medical treatment regimen with antibiotics, corticosteroids or NSAIDs can be recommended based on the causative agents. Adequate hydration, use of protective eyewear and restriction of screen time can help enormously in reducing eye strain and relaxing the eyes. If symptoms worsens, seeking immediate medical service can prevent further complications.
