Hysterectomy :
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the womb (uterus) from the female body. The procedure may also involve removing the parts surrounding the womb, such as the ovaries and cervix. A gynaecologist may recommend this procedure as a treatment for endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical cancer and uterine prolapse. A hysterectomy can provide relief from symptoms like unusual vaginal bleeding and chronic pelvic pain.
A hysterectomy can be performed in a minimally invasive manner with a few small cuts and stitches. However, a traditional open surgery is required in some cases. A hysterectomy may take between one and four hours to complete, depending on the extent of the procedure. A patient may remain hospitalized for up to two days after the procedure. The patient will be asked to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for some weeks after discharge. Most patients make a full recovery in three months.
