A heart stroke is medically termed as a Myocardial Infarction (MI). It occurs due to cessation / restriction of blood flow to heart musculature. A heart stroke can be caused due to undiagnosed heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, pulmonary stenosis, blood clots, embolisms, impaired electrical distribution, arrhythmia, and cholesterol plaque build up against blood vessels. A heart stroke manifests as a cumulation of multiple symptoms like sudden, sharp chest pain, difficulty breathing, syncope, heartburn or chest uneasiness, cold extremities, cyanosis, lightheadedness and general weakness. A cardiac enzyme blood test, EKG, stress test, echocardiogram, cardiac ultrasound, coronary angiography are helpful for evaluation. Some of the commonly employed treatment options include angioplasty with stent placement, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)/open heart surgery and immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
