Heart Enlargement :
Heart enlargement, also called cardiomegaly, occurs because of conditions that put strain on the heart. The major factors responsible for heart enlargement are heavy alcohol use or substance use disorder, tobacco use, personal medical or family history of heart attacks, similar family history, sedentary lifestyle and high blood pressure. Heart enlargement also occurs due to medical conditions like congestive heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, arrhythmia, sarcoidosis, kidney failure, heart valve disease, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, anemia, pregnancy, myocarditis, rheumatoid arthritis and coronary artery disease. The symptoms of heart enlargement include heart fluttering, dizziness, low energy, fatigue, shortness of breath, and edema in the legs, feet or abdomen. Heart enlargement is managed using various treatment options such as medications, lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, reducing salt intake and alcohol intake, controlling the fluid intake and surgical procedures like placing an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, repairing a damaged heart valve, implanting a pacemaker and coronary artery bypass surgery.
