Drug Allergy :

Drug allergic reaction is an adverse reaction involving the immune system's reaction against a drug. This can also occur for drugs prescribed by a physicians, as well as over the counter medication, herbal, or natural supplements. In this reaction the body believes this drug to be harmful and will therefore respond with itching, rash, hives, swelling, and in some cases as more serious symptoms, such as difficulty in breathing or anaphylaxis which requires immediate medical treatment.

Common drugs which are known to cause allergic reactions are antibiotics like penicillin, analgesics and anti-epileptics. Symptoms can appear immediately after the administration of the drug or can occur several days following the drug intake. Several risk factors have been identified for drug allergy, including family history of drug hypersensitivity, repetitive doses of specific medications, or even previous allergies. Treatment involves an immediate stoppage of the drug responsible for the reaction and treatment of symptoms with medications such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, and in more severe reactions, epinephrine injections.
