D and C :
.A procedure that includes the surgical removal of tissues from within the uterus is referred to as dilation and curettage or D&C. Most women experience this for diagnostic or treatment purposes. The process involving the widening of the cervix is referred to as "dilation". "Curettage" is an operative procedure performed by scraping the uterine lining through the use of a curette.
The procedure is usually performed with either local or general anesthesia. It takes a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes. Recovery time is minimal, and most women are sufficiently well to return home the same day as treatment. More common side effects may include some cramping and light bleeding for several days.
Although D&C is usually a safe procedure, complications may include infection and heavy bleeding that is possible to injure the uterus. Counseling for a patient's unique condition should be addressed with a medical professional in discussion of procedures, expectations, and risk factors. Important aftercare instructions also help ensure a smooth recovery
