Corneal Ulcer :

Corneal ulcers are similar to the sores on the corneal layer of the eyes caused due to infectious and non-infectious agents. The infectious agents are bacteria, fungi, virus and parasites, while others are eye injuries, prolonged usage of steroid drugs and autoimmune conditions. The symptoms are highly variable in occurrence and intensity based on the individuals. Appearance of bloodshot eye / pinpoint eye, excessive tearing, burning sensation, sense of foreign object, photo phobia, white or grayish discoloration of corneal layer, and eyelid swelling are common manifestations. Corneal ulcers are diagnosed clinically by using slit-lamp exam and medically managed with antibiotics, NSAIDs and corticosteroids. Other alternatives are use of scleral lenses, tarsorrhaphy/surgical closure of eyelids to promote complete healing of the corneal damage. It is highly important not to use contact lens for prolonged period and to follow proper hand/eye hygiene to avoid occurrence of corneal ulcers.
