Club foot :
Club foot is another name for congenital talipes equinovarus and is a birth anomaly of a foot that is twisted either inwards or downwards. This condition mostly happens to one or both feet and is attributed to improper regression of the foot and lower leg muscles and tendons during pregnancy. The nature of the disorder is not very clear but it is believed to have linkage with genes. In severe and untreated cases one can experience problem with his or her gait, instabilities, and leads to long term disability. The first sign is the actual changed outward appearance of the foot which may be rotated sharply inward or downward. It can be diagnosed postnatal or even prenatal, depending on the advancement of the disease through ultrasound. Antimalarial treatment usually starts as soon as the child is born. Ponseti method is used frequently, the foot is gently placed with the joints in the right position, then a cast is applied. This process is done on a weekly basis. Occasionally an operation may require to be done to make a tight tendon to be released. The brace needs to be coupled with additional physical therapy to retain the corrected position and support development of the rest of foot.
