Cervical rib :
The cervical rib refers to an additional bone that develops in the neck from the cervical vertebra at the time of birth. Cervical ribs are four different types such as a complete rib reaching the first rib, an incomplete rib with an end not attaching to anything, an incomplete rib that attaches to the fibrous band and a short bone that sticks out from the lowest vertebra of the cervical spine. The symptoms of cervical ribs are neck or arm pain, tingling sensation in the hand or arm, lump in the neck, weakness in the hand and forearm muscles and clawing of the fingers except the thumb and index finger. The cervical rib occurs due to gene mutations. It is diagnosed by performing tests like MRI, CT, nerve conduction studies, electromyography and evoked potential tests. It is managed by giving physical therapy, medications like painkillers and muscle relaxants, and advising surgery to the cervical rib.
