Cervical incompetence :
Early thinning, shortening and opening of cervix before a normal delivery of foetus is known as cervical incompetence or cervical insufficiency. Usually occurrs in second trimester. Normally the cervix present at the lower end of uterus holds the foetus until the labour and then it becomes soft, short and opens up eventually delivering the foetus. In cervical incompetence, due to lax cervix or weak cervix ,cervix may not be able to hold till full term. Symptoms include pelvic pressure and spotting in vaginal discharge. Usually diagnosed with analyzing patient's health history. Then the obstetrician might advise trans vaginal ultrasound to examine the cervix in high risk cases. As premature labour is of biggest concern treatment options are planned to minimize this. Interventions as Cervical circlage, medical management with progestron supplements might be used.
