Blepharitis :
The inflammation of the eyelids is known as blepharitis, and often can occur at the base of the eyelashes. Some natural causes could be bacterial infection or blocked oil glands. Blepharitis may also be a consequence of diseases such as dandruff or rosacea. Common symptoms include red, inflamed eyelids, itching or burning eyes, flaky skin surrounding the eyes and an altered perception of grittiness inside the eyes. The same cause might make the patient feel watery eyes or sensitivity to light.
The primary modality adopted in the treatment is eye hygiene, warm water or diluted baby shampoo is used to clean up eyelids properly. Such measures loosen the hardening crusts on eyelids. If conditions are serious, infection or inflammation may be controlled by antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines. The conditions can be chronic, thus requiring long-term management.Good care for the eyelids prevents flares up and not rubbing the eyes often reduces inflammation. Proper cleaning of tools used while applying makeup and putting in contact lenses also minimizes the formation of bacteria and hence prevents further infection.
