Black Stool :
Black stool is medically termed as melena. The presence of black colored or tarry stools often indicates underlying conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract. Conditions such as peptic ulcers, esophageal varices, gastritis, and traumatic perforation or tear in the gastric lining may cause black stools. There are other dietary causes that induce black stools such as iron supplements and activated charcoal. A gastroenterologist conducts a fecal occult blood test, comprehensive metabolic panel and endoscopy to rule out the conditions. Imaging studies such as MRI or CT scan may also be performed to locate the source of bleeding. The treatment regimen includes management of underlying conditions with medications, blood transfusions, and endoscopic electrocauterization based on the severity of gastric tear. If prolonged black stools are accompanied by severe vomiting, dizziness and heart palpitations, seeking medical attention may help in better management.
