Baldness :
Baldness, also called as alopecia, is described as loss of hair anywhere on the body where the hair grows, visible mainly on the scalp. The primary factors responsible for causing baldness include aging, change in hormones, illness leading to shedding of hair, trichotillomania (hair pulling) and scarring or cicatricial alopecia, family history of baldness and alopecia areata. Baldness is evident in both the genders differently in two ways such as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. To assess baldness, it is important to take a physical examination, followed by taking proper medical history and also by doing a punch biopsy of the skin, which helps in understanding the factor causing it and the type of baldness. The management of baldness is using various methods such as medicines to promote hair growth, platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, scalp reduction, hair transplants and hair replacement surgery. Bleeding or wide scars, grafts not taking, patchy hair growth and infection are the disadvantages of these treatments.
