Adenoids :
Adenoids are structures made of lymphoid tissue and lie above the soft palate, behind the nasal passage. Adenoids are a part of the immune system and help to trap germs that enter the body through the nose and mouth. Adenoids that are not enlarged are of size 6.2 millimeters. When there is an active infection, the adenoids enlarge up to 11.6 millimeters. The factors that are responsible for the enlargement of an adenoid include upper respiratory infections, recurring nose bleeds, allergies, and frequent ear infections. The symptoms associated with adenoids are sore throat, a feeling of fullness in the ears, mouth breathing, trouble sleeping, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and nasal congestion. To diagnose adenoids, various imaging tests and investigations like CT, MRI, X-rays, nasal endoscopy, sleep studies, and bacterial culture tests are conducted. The treatment plan to manage adenoids depends on the underlying factor causing it and includes medications and a procedure called adenoidectomy.
