abnormal gait :
The gait refers to an individual's pattern of walking. When an individual drags their feet, does not have balance, has stiff hips or legs or sways from side to side, it is said that they have an abnormal gait. Taking small steps, walking with the head bent to the ground and feeling pain while walking are also classified under abnormal gait.
The possible causes of abnormal gait include joint pain, injuries, sores on the feet, poor-fitting shoes and nerve damage. Some conditions like Parkinson's, stroke, multiple sclerosis and herniated disk can also cause abnormal gait. A doctor can determine the underlying cause of an abnormal gait with a physical exam, X-ray scan and various lab tests. Abnormal gait is treated by resolving the underlying condition. The treatment may involve medications, rest, physical therapy, mobility devices or better footwear.
