Psychiatrist :
A psychiatrist is a mental health specialist who focuses on evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of several emotional, mental and behavioural problems. They are medical doctors with academic qualifications of MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and a residency program in Psychiatry. They may pursue additional specializations such as neuropsychiatry or adolescent psychiatry. Some of the common psychiatric disorders include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, compulsive disorders and mood disorders. The majority of the diagnosis is based on the clinical evaluation and investigatory questionnaires conducted by psychiatrists. A treatment for such psychiatric disorders is customized based on the diagnosis. It may include psychotic medications, talk therapy, cognitive behavioural monitoring and therapy, brain stimulation therapy and counselling services. A psychiatrist may also recommend joining disorder specific support groups and communities to assist and monitor the condition. A psychiatrist provides consultation and guidance with confidentiality and without judgmental biases. An open communication with a psychiatrist is beneficial to understand the root cause of the problem and learn coping mechanisms.
