Vulvar cancer :
Vulvar cancer is a rare cancer of the female genitalia, particularly the outer region of the female genitals or the vulva. It begins with abnormal skin lesions or skin changes on the vulva in older women, although it may happen to young women as well. The principal cause is persistent infection with human papillomavirus or HPV. Other risk factors are smoking, a compromised immune system, or a condition known as lichen sclerosis, which results in thinning and inflammation of the vulvar skin. Symptoms of vulvar cancer include itching, pain, burning, bleeding, or a lump or sore that won't heal. Occasionally, there may be color changes or skin thickening. Diagnosis is made by physical examination of the pelvis, colposcopy, pap smear, and a small tissue test known as a biopsy. Treatment varies with the stage of the cancer and can involve surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. If detected early, vulvar cancer can be treated effectively. Frequent checkups and early concern for abnormal changes are extremely crucial so that the treatment would be initiated at an early stage.
