Trachoma :
Trachoma refers to an infectious eye disease that creates vision problems in the affected individuals. The causative organism of trachoma is a bacteria, by name, Chlamydia trachomatis. The early symptoms induced by trachoma include red and irritated eyes, blurred vision, swollen eyelids, discharge from the nose and watery discharge from the eyes. The presenting complaints of trachoma in advanced stages include extreme eye pain due to eyelashes scraping against the cornea, tightened eyelids due to scar tissue, inward-turning eyelashes because of tight eyelids, impaired vision, possible blindness and light intolerance. The treatment plan to manage trachoma involves taking antibiotics (azithromycin and tetracycline) in the early stages and a corneal transplant in case of severe damage to the cornea. If left untreated, trachoma may further complicate and cause irreversible blindness. The preventive measures to be followed to reduce the risk of trachoma include facial cleansing to stop the spread of infection, antibiotics to treat the infection, surgery to repair advanced disease and living in improved access to sanitation services and clean water.
