Pulmonary hypertension :
The heart pumps de-oxygenated blood into the lungs via vessels called the pulmonary arteries. When these arteries become narrow, blocked or damaged, the blood pressure inside these arteries increases. The heightened blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries is called pulmonary hypertension. This condition can develop due to factors such as age, infections, genetics, smoking and substance use. It can cause symptoms like chest pain, fatigue, dizziness, and breathlessness. As time passes, the condition can cause more serious problems like bleeding in the lungs, and heart failure. The condition is diagnosed with heart and lung imaging tests. It has no cure, but treatments provide relief from symptoms. Some treatment options includes medications like blood thinners, oxygen therapy, surgical procedures and lifestyle changes. In severe cases, a lung transplant may be required.
