Ptosis :
Ptosis is defined as a condition where the eyelids droop over the eye, leading to vision impairment. It can be of two types which are congenital ptosis and acquired ptosis. The presenting complaints of ptosis are excessive rubbing of eyes, increased tearing, decreased or impaired vision, eyebrow arching to compensate for vision obstruction, tiredness, and pain around eyes and children may tip their heads back to see. Ptosis occurs due to factors like stye, horner syndrome, myasthenia gravis, stroke, tumor and external ophthalmoplegia. It is diagnosed by performing diagnostic tests like slit lamp examination, visual field testing, ocular motility test and tensilon test. Treatment for ptosis depends on the factor causing it and if it occurs due to aging, surgery is the best option. If left untreated, ptosis can cause complications like astigmatism, amblyopia and chin-up position causing neck problems and developmental delays.
