Rectal Prolapse :

Rectal Prolapse is a condition of large bowel where the wall of the rectum protrude out from the anus. Some common causes of the rectal prolapse are chronic constipation, weakness of pelvic muscles as seen in elderly age groups, women are more prone than men as injury to the pelvic muscles are common during normal vaginal delivery, over weight or obesity. Signs and symptoms of rectal prolapse are protruding of mass from the anus, discharge of mucous from the anus, sensation of incomplete emptying of the stools, pain in the anal region, inability to control the bowel, constipation alternated with loose stools.

Diagnosis can be done by a simple digital rectal examination, colonoscopy, rectal manometry. Treatment of rectal prolapse depends on the severity of the symptoms, in case of mild to moderate symptoms life style management like intake of food that is rich in fibre, pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises along with stool softer medication can relive symptoms. In severe cases surgery to re-position the rectum may be necessary.
