BPH is benign prostatic hyperplasia is the swelling of prostate gland. So benign means not cancerous, and hyperplasia means too much growth. So BPH is a condition where prostate gland is larger then than normal but not due to cancer. The main purpose of the prostate gland is to support the fertility by making a fluid that goes into a semen. As the age progresses the prostate gland becomes enlarged which pushes against the bladder and urethra , causing issues with urination. It is common in men over the age of 50.Risk factors for developing a BPH are Diabetes , family history of BPH, obesity , heart disease ,erectile dysfunction and lack of physical activity. Symptoms of BPH include : increased frequency in urination especially during nights ,difficulty in starting to urinate , dribbling after urination, change in the colour and smell of the urine,incomplete evacuation of bladder. Diagnosis is made by digital rectal examination , urine analysis , uroflometry , cystoscopy and prostate biopsy (if needed ) . Treatment includes : life style modifications , pelvic floor exercises , surgery if required are advised.
