Presbyopia :
As the age progresses there would be difficulty in recognizing far objects and this is known as presbyopia. The main cause of presbyopia is due to hardening of lens in the eye. Some of the reasons for presbyopia include age, underlying diseases like diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis and usage of certain medications. Symptom of presbyopia include blurring of vision, double vision, loss of vision etc. Diagnosis is made through complete history taking and eye test. Treatment includes prescription of eye glasses which may include bifocal, trifocal, progressive, multifocal lens or contact lens. In some cases presbyopia can be corrected with a surgery and also by implantation of lens. Symptom should not be neglected and an ophthalmologist consultation should be obtained at the earliest. Presbyopia if left untreated can also lead to permanent loss of vision. Life style modification like having healthy diet, refraining from eye injury, staying hydrated and exposure to proper light while studying shall be advised by an ophthalmologist to prevent the further damage of the eyes.
