Pericarditis :
The human heart is enveloped inside a two-layer sac that is filled with fluid. This sac is called the pericaridium. When this sac becomes red and swells up, it is called pericarditis. It usually develops suddenly and lasts for a few months. Pericarditis can cause a range of symptoms, but it mainly causes a stabbing pain in the chest that can get worse when coughing, swallowing or lying flat. The condition can develop due to many reasons, but the cause is not always found. Some possible causes of pericarditis include infections, lupus and injuries to the chest. Pericarditis causes a distinct sound, so a doctor can identify this condition using a stethoscope. The doctor may also order tests such as ECG, chest X-ray and MRI to diagnose the condition. Mild pericarditis can get better without treatment, but the doctor may prescribe painkillers or other medications to provide relief from the symptoms.
