Mumps is a viral infection, and it is highly contagious. Mumps is a condition mainly affecting the salivary glands, leading to swollen jaws and a face. Mumps is caused by a virus called the paramyxovirus. It is transmitted through saliva droplets during coughing, sneezing, and talking. The symptoms that are caused by mumps are fever, parotid gland swelling, loss of appetite, headache, muscle pain and severe symptoms of mumps includes stiff neck, stomach pain, vomiting, high fever, seizures, confusion. Prevention of mumps can be done by vaccinating the child with a vaccine called MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). Mumps can be diagnosed through samples from the mouth, blood tests, and rarely through urine tests. Usually, children with mumps are able to recover within 3 to 10 days. Treatment for mumps is given in order to reduce the severity of symptoms such as adequate rest, drinking lots of fluids, a cold or hot pack over the swelling, and pain relievers to reduce the pain.
