Liver Failure in Children :
When a liver Fails to perform its normal function in children, it is called liver failure in children. Liver disease can be caused by several factors, such as viral infections, metabolic disorders, fatty liver disease or any underlying disease like autoimmune disease. There are two types of liver failure which include acute liver failure, which is caused by viral infection and another one is chronic liver failure, which develops due to hepatitis and where a liver transplant is indicated. Children with liver disease might present with abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, changes in the colour of the skin, extreme weakness, not being active, disturbed sleep and change in colour of stool. Diagnosis is done by basic blood investigations, which might include liver function tests and certain radiological investigations like ultrasound, CT abdomen, MRI, and even in some cases, a biopsy might be advised. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, and they also need to get hospitalized under special care.
