Larynx Surgery :
Larynx Surgery is known as laryngectomy and is a procedure performed under general anesthesia to remove a part or all of the larynx. Larynx Surgery is done to treat laryngeal cancer, laryngeal fracture, and chondronecrosis of the larynx in which radiation therapy damages the larynx and severe larynx damage due to injury or trauma. After larynx surgery is done, the patient should consult a speech therapist to find new ways to communicate. Nonverbal communication techniques like gestures, facial expressions, mouthing words, writing by hand, typing on compute and sign language are used after larynx surgery. Devices like voice prosthesis, electrolarynx, and techniques like esophageal speech are essential for effective communication after larynx surgery is performed. The potential complications of larynx surgery are infection, blood clots, heart conditions, breathing issues, damage to the trachea or esophagus, decreased thyroid gland functioning, difficulty in eating, swallowing, speaking, limited movement in neck and shoulders, fistulas and issues with laryngectomy stoma.
