Kidney Failure :
When a single kidney or both kidneys stop functioning, it is called kidney failure. Depending upon the Gloemrulo filtration rate, the damage to kidneys is divided into 5 stages. Symptoms of kidney disease include extreme weakness, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in concentration, swelling of feet and hands, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, decreased frequency of urination, shortness of breath, and unexplained loss of weight. Kidney failure can be acute or chronic. Acute kidney failure may be due to some underlying disease, which gets corrected if the underlying disease is treated promptly. Chronic kidney failure might be due to some diseases like autoimmune disease, uncontrolled blood sugars, urinary tract infections, and certain medications. Patients over the age of 60 having uncontrolled blood sugars, high blood pressure, prolonged use of NSAID, and a strong family history are more prone to develop kidney failure. Diagnosis is done by basic blood investigations, ultrasound of the abdomen, and urine analysis. Medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and statins might be recommended. In a few cases, dialysis may also be recommended. Kidney transplants might be suggested in chronic kidney failure patients.
