Human Papilloma virus :

Human Papilloma virus(HPV) causes viral infection in humans that affects skin and mucous membranes. HPV causes various diseases from benign(non cancerous) like warts to malignant (cancerous)conditions like cervical cancer depending upon the strain of the virus infecting the individual. HPV can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person in case of warts, sexual route, mother to child during childbirth, low immunity, poor hygiene, multiple sexual partners, unsafe sex, early age of sexual activity etc. Symptoms and signs of HPV infection include common warts on face, hands, feet , genital warts on women and men, abnormal pap smear etc,. HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer in women .Hence it is important to take HPV vaccine (gardasil, cervarix) preferably before the onset of sexual activity and get regular screening via Pap smear for early diagnosis and treatment.
