Esophageal varices :
Dilated veins, which are present in the lower part of the esophagus, are called esophageal varices. It is commonly seen in patients with portal hypertension as the blood flow is obstructed and is reversed back to the heart. The most common causes for dilatation in those veins leading to esophageal varices are liver cirrhosis and severe alcoholics, where we can see the increased portal hypertension. Esophageal varices can also bleed, which is a serious condition and has to be treated on an emergency basis. Symptoms of esophageal varices include swelling of feet and hands, ascites, severe abdominal pain, blood in stools, and vomiting. And even in some cases, loss of consciousness. Diagnosis is done by certain basic blood investigations, ultrasound, MRI, and endoscopy. Esophageal varices cannot be completely cured. It will prevail until portal hypertension is present. Treatment focuses on controlling the varices by providing supportive care, which may include IV fluids and antibiotics. Certain procedures, including variceal ligation, might also be suggested.
