Dystonia :

Dystonia is a neurological condition in which there are involuntary muscle contractions leading to abnormal postures, movements, and tremors. Dystonia can be of different types ie., primary dystonia (idiopathic), secondary dystonia (due to underlying condition or injury), focal dystonia, segmental dystonia , multifocal dystonia , hemidystonia (affects one side of the body) and generalized dystonia (widespread involvement). It can be due genetics, brain injury or trauma, infections like encephalitis, stroke or cerebral vasculature disorders, tumors, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's, Huntington's disease, medication-induced (e.g., antipsychotics, antidepressants) and toxins ( lead, mercury) etc.

Patients with dystonia present with involuntary muscle contractions, abnormal postures or movements, tremors or shaking, muscle cramps or spasms, difficulty walking or maintaining balance, eye spasms or blinking, speech difficulties and or swallowing problems. Diagnosis can be made by medical history, neurological examination, imaging studies ( MRI, CT), electromyography (EMG) and genetic testing if necessary. Management is by botulinum toxin injections ( Botox), oral medications like anticholinergics , benzodiazepines, physical therapy, Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery and other supportive care.
