Anemia in Pregnancy :
Anemia in pregnancy is a common condition where a woman has lower than normal levels of hemoglobin or Red blood cells. This condition reduces the blood's ability to carry Oxygen. It can affect both the mother and the baby if not managed properly. Symptoms of anemia include pale skin, fatigue, shortness of breath even on minimal exertion, tachycardia, headache, and occasional syncope. A gynecologist may advise certain investigations like complete blood pictures, iron studies, and stool for occult blood to know the exact cause of anemia. This condition increases the risk of infection, postpartum depression, excessive blood loss during delivery, low birth weight of the baby, premature birth, and growth development delays. Most of the patients go unnoticed until it is detected when they undergo routine screening or a check-up during pregnancy. Treatment includes administration of prenatal vitamins which contains iron and folic acid and maintaining healthy lifestyle and having a balanced diet.
