Amputation :
Amputation is described as the surgical removal of a body part, most likely an arm, finger, leg or toe. Amputation is usually indicated when there are complications of peripheral artery disease that may cause a loss of blood flow, nerve damage and loss of sensation due to diabetes, infected foot and toe ulcers, gangrene, stage three frostbite, life threatening infections in the joints, bones or other tissues, cancerous tumors and severe injuries or burn injuries. These conditions cause the body part to lose its ability to function normally and cause the tissues to die eventually. Thus, amputation is considered as a preventive measure to preserve the health the rest of the body parts. Post-operative care after amputation involves physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychotherapy and prosthesis fitting and training. Surgeons also perform some extra steps during the surgery to prepare the patient for the particular prosthesis that they have already decided on. These steps include target muscle reinnervation, osseointegration, and rotationplasty.
