Pelvic inflammatory disease :
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) affects the female reproductive organs like uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. It is associated with pain in the lower pelvic region, abnormal vaginal discharge, fever of malaise, irregular menstrual cycles, and pain during sexual intercourse or on micturition. Pelvic inflammatory disease occurs by bacterial transmission to the female reproductive organs during miscarriages, insertion of intrauterine devices (IUD), or childbirth. If left untreated PID causes chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, infertility or tubal abscess diseases. It has to be evaluated by a specialized gynecologist who conducts a wide range of diagnostic tests like blood test, urine test, ultrasounds and endometrial biopsy, if needed to conclude the severity of PID. It is usually treated by antibiotic medication course for 2 weeks long, without fail. People with PID may have to refrain from sexual intercourse till the infection is treated and complete recovery.
