Knee Replacement :
Worn-out knee joints either due to natural aging or underlying disease can be replaced. In knee replacement, the joint is separated from the body and an artificial joint is placed to restore function. Knee replacement is one of the major surgical procedures performed by orthopaedic surgeons. The entire process lasts upto two hours and is done under general anesthesia. After the surgical site is cleaned with an antiseptic, the surgeon will make a wide incision on the knee exposing the joint. The damaged portion is sawed out to be replaced in the next step. A knee joint prosthesis placed instead which is typically made of a bio compatible metal or plastic material. The incision will be closed with stitches. It takes about four to eight weeks for complete recovery after surgery. Rigorous rehabilitation exercises are carried out by a physio therapist post recovery to aid walking.
