Knee Replacement :
Knee replacement or knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which the damaged knee tissues are replaced with a prosthesis or artificial joint. Knee replacement is classified into two types, namely, total knee replacement and partial knee replacement. Knee replacement is helpful in addressing complaints such as stiffness, swelling, trouble in moving the knee, bone fractures in the knee and arthritis. Before conducting the procedure, it is necessary to order diagnostic tests such as blood investigations, X-ray, an electrocardiogram, MRI and CT scan. The steps involved in knee replacement include administering anaesthesia, followed by removing the damaged part of the bone and cartilage. After this, a prosthetic knee joint is inserted and a spacer is also given to create a cartilage-like cushion surface, after which the patella bone is reshaped. After knee replacement is completed, it is important to follow various measures like icing, physical therapy which helps in bending and straightening the knee.
