TAVI :
TAVI is medically abbreviated form of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. It is type of minimally invasive surgical procedure to perform aortic valve repair or replacement. Aortic valve is one of the four heart valves that is present between lower left ventricle and largest artery, aorta. It regulates the blood flow but in cases like aortic valve stenosis, the valve becomes narrow and requires more effort to circulate the blood. In such cases, after a thorough evaluation of the patient’s health conditions, the group of specialized surgeons elect TAVI as mode of surgical option. It is also referred to as TAVR, which is transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery. In this procedure, the defective aortic valve is replaced by biological valve tissue made of bovine or pig with the help of a small incision and catheter under radiographic guided imaging technique. After TAVI, the patient is prescribed to be on anticoagulants and antibiotics to avoid further complications and continue maintenance.
