Lump in the Neck :
Lump in the neck is caused by several underlying factors. The general cause is swelling of lymph nodes or salivary gland below the jaw due to viral or bacterial infections and cancerous tissue formation. Some of the other conditional causes are torticollis (injury or trauma causing spasm in neck muscles), sebaceous cysts underlying the skin of neck, salivary gland tumors, mumps, and goiter (enlargement of thyroid gland). The lump in the neck is associated with other symptoms like sores in the mouth, voice hoarseness, and difficulty opening the mouth. The lumps in the neck are routinely examined during the physical exam, any abnormal finding is further investigated by biopsy and imaging studies like CT scan or X-ray. Ultrasonography is the preferred choice of investigatory diagnosis in detecting cause of lumps in children. The lumps can be resolved based on the treatment of underlying causes.
