Pituitary Tumors :
Pituitary tumors are abnormal growths that are observed in the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is the smallest gland as the size of a pea, present in the brain. There are several types of pituitary tumors, such as functioning tumors which produce hormones such as growth hormone called somatotroph adenoma, luteinizing hormone called gonadotroph adenomas, adrenocorticotropic hormone called corticotroph adenoma, thyroid stimulating hormones such as thryotroph adenomas, and prolactin called prolactinomas. Non functioning tumors, which do not produce hormones, will increase in size and cause pressure upon the pituitary cells. Micoradenomas will be smaller, less than 1 cm. Macroadenomas will be about 1 cm or so. The symptoms that can be observed in the case of a pituitary tumor include headaches, seizures, pain in the face, pressure on optic nerve leading to loss of side vision and also resulting in double vision, eyelid drooping, nausea, and vomiting. These can be diagnosed through blood tests, urine tests, MRI scan, CT scan, visual field examination, and biopsy. The treatment of these tumors can be done through surgical removal, external beam radiosurgery, medications, or radiation therapy.
