Pelvic Inflammatory Disease :
Pelvic inflammatory disease(PID) is an infection that affects female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease are pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen, abnormal vaginal discharge, fever, nausea, vomiting, pain during sex, burning while peeing, and irregular periods. It occurs due to the spread of sexually transmitted bacteria (mostly gonorrhea and chlamydia) into the vagina, uterus, and ovaries. Factors that influence the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease are having multiple sexual partners, a History of PID, people who are sexually active and had pelvic surgery, and tubal ligation. If left untreated, infection can cause scar tissue in the fallopian tubes that can lead to complications like chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and tubo-ovarian abscess. Diagnosis is made by performing a pelvic exam, vaginal culture test, blood tests, urine test, ultrasound, testing for STIs, endometrial biopsy and laparoscopy.
