Rotator Cuff injury:
Rotator cuff injuries happen to the area surrounding the shoulder joint. There are some groups of soft tissues like the muscles and ligaments that surround the shoulder. These groups of tissues become weak with age and are prone to injuries in athletes. Since this is a soft tissue in jury rather than the bone that is involved, most times conservative approach is preferred by the doctors. This included a complete rest for over six weeks and regularly icing the area to reduce inflammation. Physical therapy is recommended based on the extent of the injury. The tear is graded based on imaging studies. If there is limited improvement with such options, steroid injections can be given to help with the pain. However this is not done repeatedly as it can cause strength loss of the muscles. If there is severe damage, surgery may be the only option. Arthroscopic tendon repairs to shoulder replacements are some of the Shoulder surgeries performed to improve function after rotator cuff injuries.
