what is Hypertension in Adults?
Blood pressure is nothing but the pressure applied by circulating blood on the walls of vessels. When this is higher than normal it is described as Hypertension. Blood pressure is examined using an instrument called as a sphygmomanometer. This device gives both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Normal blood pressure ranges between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. Hypertension in adults is described as having top and bottom numbers higher than the normal range. High blood pressure can be treated with lifestyle changes. Getting regular physical exercise ensures optimal heart health. Prescription treatment for adult hypertension includes giving diuretics that reduce sodium and water in the body by eliminating them. In order to relax the walls of the blood vessels directly, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are prescribed. Calcium channel blockers also work in similar fashion. Alpha blockers, beta blockers or a combination of these stimulate the nerves that indirectly have an effect to reduce high blood pressure.
