Trachoma
Trachoma is a contagious infection of the eye that is caused by a bacterium known as Chlamydia trachomatis. Trachoma can spread between people through eye secretions, nasal secretion, throat secretions, from infected clothes and personal items, and through flies. Untreated trachoma can lead to blindness and its main symptoms include itching of the eyes, redness of the eyes, discharge from the eyes that may contain mucus or pus, swelling of the eyelids, pain in the eyes, and eventually loss of vision. Trachoma is more common in children and other factors that increase the risk of trachoma include poor personal hygiene, living in crowded and unsanitary conditions, and female gender. Ophthalmologists treat trachoma with antibiotics, and later stage disease may require surgical procedures.
