A stomach ulcer is a sore or lesion present in the gut/stomach lining. It is clinically presented as gastric or upper abdominal pain, bloating or fullness, frequent vomiting or fullness, with accompanied weight loss. Helicobacter pylori infection, prolonged use of pain relieving medications, chronic stress and excessive stomach acid production may cause stomach ulcer. It may be evaluated with diagnostic procedures such as gastric endoscopy, imaging studies and blood tests for H.pylori infection. The treatment plan includes medications such as course of antibiotics, acid reducing medications, lifestyle modifications, and surgical management in case of severe conditions. If left untreated, this may cause gastric perforation, internal bleeding and risk of stomach cancer. Avoiding alcohol consumption and smoking may help in prevention of stomach ulcers. Stress coping mechanisms and therapies may significantly help in worsening the stomach acid production.
