Peripheral Artery Disease :
Peripheral artery disease can be referred to as a condition that affects the arteries, leading to plaque buildup. The peripheral artery disease can be caused by atherosclerosis, which causes the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, thus narrowing and restricting the flow of blood. The symptoms that can be seen when there is peripheral artery disease can be pain in the legs, claudication pain while walking, cramping of legs, skin color changes, weakness in legs, numbness, no pulse, or decreased pulse in the feet. The diagnosis of peripheral artery disease can be based on the physical examination, CT angiography, ankle-brachial index (ABI) test, in which the blood pressure in the ankle and arm is compared, ultrasound scan, and MR angiography. The management of peripheral artery disease can be done by making changes in lifestyle, such as diet, having regular physical activity, quitting smoking, medications to control blood clots, and surgical treatment, which involves opening the blockages or bypassing the blockages in the arteries.
