Frequently asked questions

Ovarian cancer is the abnormal growth of cells present in the ovaries due to mutations in cell DNA, leading to their rapid multiplication and formation of tumor masses.

Ovarian cancer doctors near you advise that ovarian cancer may not cause any symptoms in the early stages of the disease, and as the disease progresses symptoms such as pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis, change in bowel habits, increase in urination frequency, tiredness, back pain, weight loss, abdominal fullness, etc., can develop.

Risk factors for ovarian cancer can include aging, a family history of ovarian cancer, being overweight & obese, hormone therapy after menopause, early age of menstruation & menopause, endometriosis, and never being pregnant.

Ovarian cancer usually spreads through the lymphatic system, peritoneal fluid in the abdomen, and bloodstream to organs within the abdomen such as the liver, intestines, stomach, uterus, etc.,

Ovarian cancer specialists near you diagnose ovarian cancer based on symptoms, medical and family history, clinical examination of the abdomen and pelvis, and imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT/MRI scan, blood tests for CA125 protein, and tissue biopsy in some cases.

The different stages of ovarian cancer include:

  • Stage I - where the cancer is limited to one or both ovaries
  • State II - when cancer has spread beyond the ovaries to the fallopian tubes, uterus, or nearby organs in the pelvis
  • Stage III - when cancer has spread to the lymph nodes within or beyond the peritoneum, and the lymph nodes in the abdomen, the liver, or the spleen
  • Stage IV - when cancer has spread to distant parts of the body such as the lungs, or the lymph nodes in the groin

The treatment of ovarian cancer depends on the stage and type of cancer, and the overall health of the individual. It usually involves surgical procedures combined with chemotherapy. Other treatments include targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy.

The complete prevention of ovarian cancer may not be possible but the risk can be reduced by getting proper medical advice, regular medical checkups, managing weight, eating a healthy diet, use of birth control pills based on medical advice, and possibly removal of ovaries if there is a high risk.

Ovarian cancer surgery doctors may perform various procedures for ovarian cancer management that can include the removal of one ovary or removal of both ovaries(oophorectomy surgeries), removal of the fallopian tube, and the uterus (hysteria salpingo-oophorectomy), and removal of cancerous tissue from other affected organs if cancer has spread.
