Osteomalacia :
Osteomalacia is a bone problem characterised by weakening and softening of the bones. The common symptoms of osteomalacia include muscle pain, having bones that break more easily, difficulty walking or a change in the gait, stiffness and weakness, mainly after being active, muscle spasms or cramps, mainly in the hands and feet, a feeling like pins and needles in the arms and legs and more frequent falls. Vitamin D deficiency is the primary factor responsible for causing osteomalacia, which occurs due to lack of enough exposure to sunlight. Osteomalacia also occurs due to factors such as liver disease, kidney failure, a digestive condition causing malabsorption, certain genetic conditions and antiseizure medications. To diagnose osteomalacia, the investigations to be conducted include blood tests to check for the levels of creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, electrolytes, parathyroid hormone and other tests such as X-rays, bone mineral density scan, urine test and bone biopsy. The treatment modalities to address osteomalacia involve using supplements for vitamin D, phosphorus or calcium.
