Newborn Jaundice :
Newborn jaundice is seen in newborn babies, which is characterized by the presence of high levels of bilirubin in the blood. It will be called neonatal jaundice. Bilirubin is a yellow colored substance that can be formed due to the breakdown of red blood cells in the blood. The symptoms that are observed in newborn jaundice will be yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes. There are types of jaundice like physiological jaundice, breast milk jaundice, and breastfeeding jaundice. The diagnosis of newborn jaundice will be done through physical examination, blood test, and skin tests. It will subside on its own when it is mild jaundice. But when it is severe and moderate jaundice, the treatment is done by frequent feeding or supplemental feeding, intravenous immunoglobulin, light therapy, and exchange blood transfusion. Newborn jaundice is not a harmful condition, but when there are higher bilirubin levels, it can lead to damage to the brain.
