Leg Ulcers :
A leg ulcer is a wound that develops on the legs and does not heal easily. Leg ulcers take several weeks to heal. Moreover, such ulcers constantly ooze a clear fluid or pus. Depending on the severity of a leg ulcer, it may grow larger and not heal at all. The underlying cause of leg ulcers is usually poor blood flow, which can occur due to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Diabetes, venous insufficiency, high blood pressure and peripheral artery disease can also result in poor blood flow in the legs.
The diagnosis of leg ulcers begins with a physical exam of the legs. A doctor may order various tests like ultrasound and a biopsy, to determine the underlying cause of the ulcer. Leg ulcers are treated according to the underlying cause. The treatment usually begins with compression therapy, which involves wearing compression socks throughout the day. If the doctor detects an infection, then they may also prescribe antibiotics.
