What is the common treatment for severe Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia requires a different treatment compared to mild or moderate cases. Hypoglycemia is considered severe when you require assistance from someone to recover. For example, you might need a glucagon injection or intravenous glucose if you cannot swallow oral carbohydrates.
In general, patients with Diabetes who use insulin should carry a glucagon kit for emergencies. It contains a synthetic form of glucagon that is administered as an injection or dry nasal spray, depending on the type. Synthetic glucagon makes your liver release stored glucose, causing your blood sugar to rise.
It is equally important to ensure that family members and friends are aware of the kit's location and trained in its use to respond effectively during emergencies. For injectable glucagon, follow the instructions in the kit to administer it in the person's buttock, arm, or thigh. If using nasal powder glucagon, follow the instructions on the package to administer it into their nostril.
Once the individual regains consciousness, typically within 5 to 15 minutes, they may experience Nausea and Vomiting. If they are lying down, gently roll them onto their side to prevent choking if they vomit. This approach ensures effective severe hypoglycemia treatment.
What are the 3 signs of Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia symptoms can occur suddenly and may differ from person to person. The symptoms can even vary with each individual.
Three prominent Hypoglycemia symptoms include:
- Sweating and Chills
- Weakness
- Extreme Hunger (Polyphagia)
These symptoms can vary among individuals and may manifest alongside other indicators such as shaking, a faster heart rate, dizziness, anxiety, confusion, or skin pallor.
In severe cases of hypoglycemia, individuals may experience other symptoms, such as double or blurred vision, slurred speech, coordination difficulties, disorientation, seizures, or even a loss of consciousness.
Hypoglycemia can also occur during sleep (Nocturnal Hypoglycemia). This may lead to restless sleep, night sweats, nightmares, and post-wake-up fatigue or confusion.
